QCF and NCFE

The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and NCFE

Over the next few months, our Research and Product Development team will be working hard to develop new qualifications ready for our move to the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

The QCF’s aim is to simplify vocational qualifications for learners, providers and employers, ensuring that reformed qualifications and other learning provision are recognised, understood, valued and trusted. The new framework is being developed with a view to replace the current National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Qualifications will be at a Level and be called an Award, Certificate or Diploma depending on the number of credits (or size).

In the QCF, units and qualifications will have a ‘credit’ value. Learners will achieve credits which can be used towards qualifications they may progress on to. Learners can also claim credit certificates if they don’t complete all of the units needed for a full qualification (we already provide a similar service through our Letters of Unit Credit).

Where appropriate, credits will be transferable between NCFE qualifications and qualifications offered by other Awarding Bodies.

We’re working closely with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and Sector Skills Councils on this development and are excited about the opportunities the QCF has to offer.

We’re pleased to be working with SkillsActive and Skills for Health as part of the ‘fast-track’ arrangements for a small number of qualifications on these sectors.

From September 2008 we’ll be introducing qualifications which are accredited on the QCF and also keeping our NQF provision available.

The sector pages on our website - www.ncfe.org.uk - will be updated regularly to let you know what’s happening.
